TPDE aims to bring out the competitive spirit in all our dancers in every genre. We believe that competitive platforms will allow our dancers grow and think more creatively. It also grants dancers to collaborate with one another in group categories in competitions and group battle formats.

BREAKING POINTE

Breaking Pointe is a modern competition for TPDE dancers. It is open for all dancers to participate and there are 3 different categories (Solo, Freshie & Group). It is a compulsory modern genre competition for TPDE modern dancers. Dancers from Hip Hop and B-Boy are also welcomed to compete but the genre performed must be modern.

Dancers must first qualify for Breaking Pointe before moving on the the finals which is with a live audience. The latest volume of braking point (Volume 6) of Breaking Pointe was recorded and streamed due to Covid-19 and can be viewed on our YouTube Channel (TPDE OFFICIAL). WATCHAGOT?

WatchaGot is a one day freestyle battle for the Hip Hop and B-boy dancers. The aim of this event is to expose TPDE dancer to the battle scene in a safe environment. There has been 3 categories in past — 7-2-Smoke, Hip Hop and the B-boy Category. The dancers go through Prelims where the finalists teams are picked through a point system based on Musicality, Techniques and Foundation.

Students/alumni in dance CCAs from other Polytechnics in Singapore are also invited to participate in this competition. This exchange allows participants to learn from one another and foster bonds within and outside of TPDE.

GROOV-ED!

Groov-ed! is a mixed genre competition created to give our dancers the opportunity to compete with fellow dancers in our different core genres (Hip Hop, Modern and B-boy). This was the first event we had with an audience in 2 years and it was an opportunity that all our dancers were looking forward too. There were 4 categories in the event — Freshmen, Duet, Solo and Battle Category. TPDE Alumni were invited as guests to judge and DJ for the competition.

Participants in this competition were challenged through prompts given by the organisers. They were given a choice to select one of two words to guide the choreography and overall intention of their pieces. This year, they were given exhilaration and confusion as word prompts. This pushed the dancers to think of the different ways to portray the word they selected.

We also introduced a battle category with a 2v2 battle format. In place of WatchaGot, we created a battle category where we randomly paired 1 Hip Hop and 1 B-Boy dancer together. The top 4 out of 12 teams battled in the live show. Guests were also invited from other school dancer clubs (SDZ & Mighty Nomads) to participate in the battle.

The entire event was live streamed due to the limited audience capacity and is available on our YouTube channel.
